Project Activator Episode 12: Final Paint Choice, Deck Repair, Jackplates

In Episode 12, we talk about grinding out the rotten core in the deck. Every place a hole was cut, there is rot. Water always finds a way in, so we begin removing it, and will repair the deck to be reattached to the hull. Next, it will go to paint. We also talk about the final colors, and the color scheme. Silver, with a white hull bottom and black center stripe should look good.

Episode 12:

The hardest part was deciding on the hull bottom color. I really wanted to match the silver, top to bottom. This can be done, but for overall durability, the Awlgrip single stage is incredibly tough, and will stand up to trailering and long term wear a little better than a two stage below the waterline. Above the chine, we are using Awlcraft SE, with Awlcraft 2000 clear, a two stage system for our metallic finish. There will be a black center stripe as well. This should look clean and simple.

Another part of the episode is deciding on the jackplate. We have a Bob’s 4” already, but I am considering a different style 6” jackplate, and might even go with a manual plate. My favorite for this boat is the SeaStar plates. I like the design, and I hear they are great. The manual is lighter, less expensive and makes the rigging cleaner. It sure is nice to lift the engine from the dash though. What do you guys think?

Deck needs a lot of work. Quite a bit of rot. This boat is almost 30 years old, and moisture always finds a way

The Evinrude G2 sits back about 4 inches further back than most outboards. Setback will be tricky.
