Custom Tuff 28: Mercury Racing Powered Ultimate Sport Boat
When it comes to sport boats and boats in general, bigger isn’t always better but there is usually a perfect size. For a twin engine outboard sport boat, I think 28 might be the perfect size. You get the trailer-ability, ease of use and practicality, while providing ample performance. In this case, we have one of the cleanest examples of a modern spot boat. This is a Tuff 28’ with twin Mercury Racing 300XS engines. Originally the Tuff Marine demonstration boat, Randy Corson acquired it in 2017 and did a full paint and re-rig on it. Let’s take a look at a one of a kind Tuff.
For Randy Corson, customizing boats is his business and his passion. So when he got a hold of this 28, he turned it into a work of art. Randy incorporated a very unique and sharp custom paint job. The colors are a unique marble gray, with black and orange features and an lime green accent stripe. They work really well and are just the right touch of flare for this low slung monster. To go compliment the colors, the custom PPI interior was done in white, with gray, blakc and oregon accents. I love this color scheme, it’s crazy enough and classy at the same time.
With a pair of new at the time Mercury Racing 300XS’s pushing the boat, it was only right to do everything over the top. A twin Porta Bracket provides 12” of lift and 17” of setback for optimum functionality. Custom Livorsi gauges and a Garmin screen help monitor everything. As you would expect, everything is finished to the highest standard and designed for performance and functionality. The windscreens keep the wind out of your face even at full throttle. Practical and fast.
The Tuff 28 is 28’4” overall with a 7’11” beam, 22.5 degree deadrise and this one weighs 4,000 Lbs fully rigged. The owner runs a few different props and runs Spinelli 14 ¾ 32 pitch for everyday use and does 98 MPH, with a 65 MPH cruise at 4,000 RPM. A set of Spinellis’ for top speed can get to 102 MPH. The electric assist, full Imco steering means complete control at any speed and is effortless to steer.
Built a little heavier than the later generation Tuff 28’s, make this hull capable in any water. Storage is abundant everywhere too with a large rear hatch area as well as under the bow. Family boating never looked so good.
After acquiring it, the current owner installed SeaDek, custom swim platforms, alien cowls, and carbon fiber wing plates and tie bar. To say no expense was spared would be accurate. This is a special boat. The attention to detail and quality really standout.
