Battle Wagon Boats 21 Savage: A Traditional SOB Sport Boat for Race and Pleasure
In many ways, Battlewagon Boats is an example of how the boat industry is still an entrepreneurial venture where the little guys can still compete and build amazing boats. For Christian Del Collo, he is building custom boats by hand and using his ingenuity and experience to create classic custom boats to each customer’s needs. He makes a few different hulls right now and we wanted to take a look at his 21’ Savage, which is a classic SOB style 22 degree hull that originated in the North East where Christian is from.
SOB hulls are legendary and Battlewagon’s 21 Savage is a great example of taking the tradition further by updating the hull just enough to enhance performance without losing the traits of a true small sport boat. With identifiable classic lines, the strakes have been deepened and the pad widened to help it accommodate modern power. The deck has a raised rear haunch for a railing or windshield.
Christian is also using a new materials and traditional building techniques to the Savage, with a solid fiberglass bottom and fully cored sides and deck. Customers ordering the Savage can and do race in Class 7, so a slightly heavier build is a benefit when running hard offshore. It’s fast without being a potato chip. The first Savage was running into the 80s with 250 HP. You can order it hull only to rig yourself if you wish.
Battlewagon is busy with the Savage and a couple smaller fishing boats. Every boat is made to order so any color or option is not out of the question. Here are some photos of a Class 7 ready Savage for an inside look. Personally, I love the old school approach and the hull is proven while enhanced so you can be confident in the boat you are getting.
