A Legendary Eliminator SST Gets a Mercury Racing 200R Repower

Some boats reach legendary status because they define an era of design and performance, and that’s exactly why Stoker boats from the legendary Al Stoker are so highly regarded. Styling that is timeless, performance that is extremely capable with an array of different engines. In the heyday of Mod VP racing and endurance racing, Stoker made a really big impact. The 20.1 Stoker (SST) is the epitome of West Coast cool; it is sleek and fast, with beautiful gel work. The lucky owner of this particular 1985 Eliminator Stoker acquired it in Northern California, where it began life with a Yamaha 220. Let’s take a look at the transformation over the years.

Being a Mercury guy, Once Chase got the Eliminator Stoker, he immediately repowered to a Mercury Racing 225 ProMax. Kyle at Wide Open Throttle Marine took care of the complete rerig and the boat had a really nice refresh at that time. A new Coosa transom was installed with new knees, gelcoat repairs, a new Bob’s 6” plate and new Livorsi gauges. West Coast Marine updated the interior with new upholstery, making the classic Stoker like new.

The new age V6 200R four stroke really moves the Stoker, 82 MPH, and brings efficiency and DTS.

With the 225 ProMax, Chase saw upper 70s, and he loved the raw experience the ProMax provided, but when the new 200R was released, new technology and fresh power really steered him in that direction.

Mercury Racing released the V6 200R in North America as a DTS engine that fits right in the market for boats that are weight sensitive, 469 lbs dry, and still need torque, RPM and solid mounts. Plus, you can get a torque master or sport master gearcase. Both cases feature 1.75:1 gear ratio. To Chase, this was the perfect match to repower, retaining the balance and handling of the classic Stoker was key.

Chase had already refreshed the boat’s interior and gelcoat when he first repowered it with a Mercury Racing ProMax back in the day. The Stoker still looks like new.

The biggest difference was rerigging with digital controls and shift, a new wiring harness and a few other upgrades. Chase originally took the boat to Wide Open Throttle in Vista California, where Kyle handled the 225 ProMax upgrade, so he took it right back to Kyle many years later for the new engine. A unique DTS foot throttle was fabricated by Power Performance Engineering, and a STR shifter handled the controls. His 200R has the torque master.

Chase is impressed by the 200R and is seeing 82 MPH at 6100 RPM with a Mercury Racing Lightning ET 4 blade. At wide open he is burning about 6 gallons an hour, which is incredible. Mid range acceleration is strong. Chase wants to run more props and squeeze more out of it. So far this is a really amazing setup. The 200R is an excellent repower if you want to get into a four stroke, DTS and keep the weight under 500 Lbs.

These boats are just awesome. Al Stoker is a legend and this is my favorite design of his. Perfect color combo too.

I’m seeing similar reports with other boats, where the 200R is outperforming 225 HP engines. It’s safe to assume the 200R is putting out a healthy amount of power with that 6400 RPM range. Thanks to Chase for sharing his really cool Eliminator Stoker. You can find him at lowerriver_outboards and in person at the lower river or Lake Havasu AZ.
